Azores: Nine Volcanic Islands in the Mid-Atlantic
The Azores archipelago lies in the North Atlantic, roughly 1,400 kilometres west of the Portuguese mainland. Nine islands, divided into three groups (Eastern, Central, and Western), make up this autonomous region. Around 236,000 people live across the islands, with Sao Miguel alone accounting for more than half that figure. Ponta Delgada, on Sao Miguel, serves as the regional capital and economic centre.
Each island has a distinct character shaped by volcanic geology and isolation. Sao Miguel features the twin crater lakes of Sete Cidades, the thermal springs at Furnas, and tea plantations at Gorreana, Europe's only remaining commercial tea operation. Terceira's Angra do Heroismo, a UNESCO World Heritage city, preserves 16th-century fortifications and street plans from the era when the Azores served as a waystation for Atlantic trade routes. Faial's Horta marina has been a traditional mid-Atlantic stopping point for transatlantic sailors, its harbour walls covered in paintings left by passing crews. Pico, visible from Faial across a narrow channel, is dominated by Mount Pico (2,351 metres), the highest point in all of Portugal, and its UNESCO-listed vineyards grow grapes in walled enclosures of black basalt.
The Azorean economy relies on dairy farming (accounting for a significant share of Portugal's total milk production), fishing (particularly tuna), and a growing tourism sector built around whale watching, diving, and hiking. The archipelago's position along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge means geothermal energy is locally significant, and volcanic and seismic activity remains a reality. The Capelinhos eruption on Faial in 1957-58 is within living memory.
