Distrito de Beja covers the southern Alentejo, a vast area of low-density settlement bordering Spain to the east and the Algarve to the south. With roughly 161,000 residents across fourteen municipalities, it is one of the emptiest parts of Western Europe. The landscape is defined by wheat fields, sunflower crops, cork oak montados, and olive groves that stretch to the horizon in every direction. Summer temperatures routinely exceed 40 degrees Celsius, making Beja one of the hottest places on the Iberian Peninsula.
Beja, the district capital, was founded as Pax Julia by Julius Caesar and retains traces of Roman, Visigothic, and Moorish occupation. The Museu Regional is housed in a former convent associated with the Letters of a Portuguese Nun, and the Torre de Menagem rises to 40 metres above the unbroken plain. Agriculture dominates the economy, transformed by the Alqueva irrigation system that brought rice, tomato cultivation, and intensive olive production to formerly dry-farmed land. Mertola, above the Guadiana River, has reinvented itself through its Islamic museum and biennial arts festival, while the Odemira municipality includes the southwestern Alentejo coastline, one of the least developed Atlantic shores in Europe.
