Distrito de Setubal: The Southern Shore of the Tagus and the Arrabida Coast
Across the Tagus from Lisbon, the Distrito de Setubal spreads south along the coast and into the agricultural plains of the Alentejo fringe. Close to 790,000 people live here, many of them commuting daily into Lisbon via the 25 de Abril or Vasco da Gama bridges. The district includes Almada, Seixal, and Barreiro on the Tagus south bank, the port city of Setubal itself, and the Troia peninsula stretching into the Atlantic.
Setubal, the district capital, developed around sardine fishing and the salt trade. Its Mercado do Livramento is frequently cited among the finest food markets in Europe. The Serra da Arrabida, a limestone range between Setubal and Sesimbra, protects Mediterranean-type vegetation and shelters beaches that fill with visitors from Lisbon every summer. Palmela, perched on a hilltop above the plain, is known for its medieval castle and the Festa das Vindimas wine harvest festival.
Industrial activity concentrates around the Setubal port, which handles significant automotive exports from the Volkswagen Autoeuropa plant in Palmela. This factory, one of the largest private employers in Portugal, assembles vehicles for export across Europe. The south bank municipalities, meanwhile, have transitioned from heavy industry toward residential and commercial development as Lisbon's housing costs push residents across the river.
The Sado Estuary, south of Setubal, hosts a resident population of bottlenose dolphins and extensive wetlands important for migratory birds. Across the estuary, the Troia peninsula combines Roman ruins (a fish salting complex from the 1st century) with a modern resort development. Sesimbra, tucked beneath cliffs on the western side of the Arrabida range, maintains a working fishing harbour alongside its beach tourism.
