Distrito de Viana do Castelo: The Northern Minho and the Lima Valley
Occupying the far northwestern corner of Portugal, the Distrito de Viana do Castelo is bordered by Spain's Galicia to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. With around 252,000 residents spread across ten municipalities, it is one of the less densely populated districts in the country. Viana do Castelo, the capital, sits where the Lima River meets the sea, overlooked by the hilltop Santuario de Santa Luzia and its early 20th-century neo-Byzantine basilica.
The district's cultural identity is strongly Minhoto. Traditional festivals, particularly the Romaria de Nossa Senhora da Agonia in August, draw enormous crowds for processions, folk costumes, fireworks, and street markets. The Minho's reputation for vinho verde, the young, slightly effervescent wine produced from trellised vines, is rooted in districts like this one. Ponte de Lima, claiming to be the oldest town in Portugal, hosts a biweekly market that has operated continuously since a 1125 charter.
The economy relies on fishing, shipbuilding (the Viana do Castelo shipyard has been active since the 1940s), wind energy manufacturing, and agriculture. The Peneda-Geres National Park, Portugal's only national park, extends into the eastern municipalities of Arcos de Valdevez and Melgaco, protecting Iberian wolves, wild horses, and granite mountain landscapes.
